Yes Steve, so many things are designed to be left in standby where they 
need to be, but so much more does not need to be but cannot be switched 
off except by turning off at the plug.

Why does my cassette player, or kitchen radio, leave the circuitry 
"live" even when switched off at the knob? I suppose it saves the 
manufacturers a few pence in not using mains-rated components.
