Does Text Edit allow you to open up documents that other people have created in MS Word?

that's very useful thanks David as currently my priority is precisely the same as yours. Editing and writing text effectively rather than making it look nice. Guess I'll stay where I am.

I bought Pages but I still mainly use text edit.

Partly this is me not having enough time to get used to the very different techniques of Pages.

I also prefer the way text Edits allows a more natural experience with word documents and you do not have to manage each page individually, which is a pain if you are working on a long document.

The document Inspector is a very important part of Pages to learn.
In general Pages reminds me of the old Desktop publishing programs I use to possess on Windows machines.
Very good on layout and loads of templates.

My priority though at the moment is writing rather than appearance.

Can anyone tell me whether there are any advantages to moving from Textedit which I currently use on my Mac to Pages? for instance, is it possible to create and save docs in more formats? Can you create bulleted lists etc?
And is there more flexibility with regard to font sizes and attributes?
