Thanks, Alan, this sounds just the ticket. Having trouble finding it in the
UK at the moment, though - Amazon have it listed but don't know if they'll
get it back in stock, unfortunately.
Thanks to John, also, as I hadn't thought about an iPhone app so am now
looking through all of these to see if I can find one with some audible
output when a string is tuned - I'm not holding my breath, though!

Do a google for stringmaster tuners or tunermatic robotic tuners. I got one
of these, and it was very good. You put one end on the tuning pegs of your
guitar in turn, and twang each string in turn, and the robotic turner twists
each peg until it is in tune, and then gives an audible beep to tell you.
