Hi Jackie

Thanks for drawing my attention to this. We need a disclaimer on the app of the month.

Hi Paul et al

I paste below, the blurb printed in this month's Access IT mag.

Amedia Live Reader is a new solution for instant O C R. It scans a
live image captured by a camera and reads the texts in it in
real-time.

Languages supported are English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian,
Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional),
Japanese and Korean. Amedia Live Reader's O C R technology is
powered by A B B Y Y.

To use:

1. Open the app with VoiceOver tuned on. 2. Tap the "Active" button to
focus. The app will start beeping. 3. Direct the camera to text. The
app detects and reads it in real-time. 4. Hold the device flat (with
the camera facing down) to take a still picture. This is useful when
you're reading paper sheets on a desk. 5. Previously read texts can be
reached by left swiping. 6. Copy the texts to the clipboard in the
settings screen.

Capturing tips:

Do not put the camera too close to the subject.
Try to face the camera front to the target.
For best results, use at a distance of 20cm to 30cm (or 10 inches)
from the target.
For larger objects such as signboards, a distance of 2 to 3 meters
(or 10 feet) or more would be recommended.

Platform: i O S

Download from iTunes (http://apple.co/2aaUmqI)

User comments.

This app is based off the same O C R technology that powers
K N F B Reader, however it doesn't offer a field of view report.
After having only spent a few minutes with this app it is fair to say,
it is very accessible, all buttons are labelled, and you get bleeps as
a guide for lining up. A big selling point for this app seems to be
some of the non-western languages it supports. One nice feature with
this app is it can read text in real-time which K N F B Reader can't
do, and although we have apps that can read in real-time they
generally haven't been based off good technology. Hopefully as this is
based off the same technology that powers K N F B Reader it will
give better results than other apps that can also read in real-time.

Hi Jackie

This is why comments such as Sean's are so important.

Users' experience will vary on all kinds of apps and tech.

We point out in the app of the month that because we write about the app, we
don't endorse it in any way.

We want to encourage discussion and have frank reviews but we can't do it
without contributions.

Hi Richard

I tend to agree. By the very nature of RNIB suggesting an app of the
month,it implies accessibility is very good. I do appreciate, however, that
this kind of app differs greatly from person to person, and that Sean using
it, for example, is not mine or your experience thus far, Richard.
Accessibility for someone with some useful sight is definitely not the same
as for a totally blind person.

I'll keep trying when I get some time.

Paul, surely by highlighting an app of the month, the implication is that
that is a recommendation. If that isn't the case, or if problems may be
anticipated, I feel that it would be helpful to make this clear.

As the team who choose app of the month, this is not correct.

We are all visually impaired. Some users have had success with this app.

We aren't recommending apps but putting them out there for people to
investigate.

We want this to be a two-way process and encourage users to submit apps for
inclusion in app of the month.

This invariably doesn't happen. If you have an app to share please email the
Technology For Life Team tfl at rnib.org.uk

Sean's comments are exactly what we're looking for.

Looking forward to more app reviews

Paul

Jackie,

The problem with the RNIB recommending apps is that oftentimes people with
more vision than others have a lot of say in the choosing. It's not a very
well-described app either, it sounds as iff someone either sighted or with a
lot of vision tried it out first, or to be honest that they just read the
copy online and went with that.

Personally I wouldn't be without the app now. I use it on packets, jars,
boxes, screens, signs and all sorts of things. As I mentioned earlier in
the week I don't find it very helpful for documents directly, but it's great
for me when it comes to food expiration dates, setting the temperature on
the air conditioning units at work or choosing the HDMI output on
inaccessible TVs, all the niggly little jobs where the time taken to "take
picture" might be a problem etc. I do find it unfortunate that Apple's
refund policy isn't as wonderful as Googles, but also think that we don't
need yet another thread descending into anarchy about the best mobile OS,
either...

Thanks Richard, will do this when I get my bill Email which hasn't come
through yet. I wouldn't bother if it were only a pound or two, but I don't
think this app is worth the money, and I am surprised even further that RNIB
has it as app of the month!

Jackie, If you look at the e-mail confirming the purchase, you should have a
link called "report a problem".

If you activate the link, you should be taken to a page with a combo box on
it which allows you to select the reason for the problem, and there's a box
where you can enter other comments. Seems straightforward enough, but
haven't had my refund yet!

Hi Richard

How do you do that, please? It is something I have never done given that
apps I have tried before that haven't worked are cheap enough as a rule.

I bought this app last night following the various comments on and off list
about it. I have to say, however, that I couldn't put hand on heart and
recommend it. I appreciate it takes a lot of practice, and am prepared to
take that into account. But it does a lot of beeping - which frankly drives
me round the bend - and does pick up text, but doesn't always read it that
well. It seems to like objects rather than documentation, I find, such as
the washing-machine, or a computer keyboard. It is very early days, but I'm
not overly impressed if I am being honest. I turned off the beeping, but
unless it was me, I couldn't get much out of it when I did that. I find I
can achieve much more with K-NFB Reader, but I will keep trying and see what
happens. At the moment though, I find it a very irritating, time-consuming
process.
