Hi Paul.

Let me be clear about the compatibility of this device. The Orbit is fully compatible with Windows based screen readers and voiceover on the Mac, it is also compatible with iPhone and android. The function which is causing concern here is the ability to upgrade the firmware which is currently only available on Windows. No other function is affected by this limitation, it is purely for technical reasons that the firmware can only be updated on Windows. Firmware updates contain fixes to issues reported by Orbit Research customers and partner suppliers.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Terry,

I totally agree that anyone buying this produc, should be made aware that it's only windows compatibel.

I had thought of buying one but given I had planned only to use this with my I-Phone, i'm glad i'm aware of it's limitations.

Regarding the comment about being abel to find out such info via the manual, well that's all well and good but an absolute newsence if you've bought the product, only to have to return it which for us is a bit of a rigmrole.

Paul.

Yes Steve but it's up to the reseller of the product to ensure customers are aware of major factors.
Sure. Of course, you cant deal with every possibility, but this isn’t just a possibility, it's a crucial point as now it's absolutely not the case that everyone uses a Windows machine, so if that was essential to keep the machine upgraded it should have been clearly stated, especially if the issue of upgradability was a component of the marketing bumf!
As a reseller of products I'm sure you'd do this as a matter of course?

Hi Andy,

Please be realistic though. You can't upgrade any Braille device with an Android or iPhone for example. Should RNIB be pushing developers to allow upgrading from those devices? Of course not. In the end, it's up to the manufacturer, not RNIB, as to what they provide in the way of upgradability.

All the best

Steve

It’s fascinating which people on here choose to miss the fundamental points: the RNIB brought this to market. I’m not making any points of law, I’m talking about what kind of organisation they are and the people they serve. I believe they have a responsibility to disclose this limitation of ability to upgrade; and they also have a responsibility to bring pressure to bear ensuring that upgrades would become available to non-Windows users.
We’re not all like some of the people on this list who have their homes stuffed with alternative technologies just in case one doesn’t work, and we don’t all have access to somebody else’s PC be it a friend or a community college et cetera. The bottom line in my opinion is the RNIB have got this wrong and should hold their hands up and do whatever they can to correct it. That isn’t just ranting, it’s my experience with the situation that doesn’t provide equality to all customers. There will always be some people who complain for the sake of it, I’m not one of those, but if we don’t speak up when we think one of the organisations that is after all a charity that is intended to serve our community, is doing so in less than a fair and equal way, then how would anything change for the better?

And it’s on the RNIB‘s shoulders to do something about it so that we’re all on a level playing field! Paul I’m sorry but you can’t get away with this, it is not acceptable and it’s just another example of RNIB‘s arrogance! To try and make it acceptable by saying upgrades are usually only minor is an absolute insult to the customer. I’m writing this as a strong message because it’s how I feel, and RNIB deserves all the bashing it gets because this is all too regularly it’s attitude to its customers!
