no, they don't.
as long as the person you want to call is in your alexa contacts, and 
properly registered, you can call there echo device.

Hi Phill and all,

I believe that for the echos to communicate with each other they have to 
either be in the same room or very close proximity to each other.

I could however be wrong about this.
