[BCAB] Windows 10

Hi,

I certainly wouldn't install it remotely. If the connection is lost mid-upgrade, you wouldn't get it back.

As for upgrading, it is possible, if you run the upgrade assistant and have Narrator on when you do it. But some upgrades don't go well, if for example, you have old hardware on there and it can't find the drivers.

All the best

Steve

hi,

is there a step by step guide on how to upgrade to windows 10 from w7 for a novice and how possible is it for a totally blind person to do?
also would a tech person be able to install it remotely? would there be any safety implications of doing this? how much would it cost and does any one know of any reputable person that can do this for a reasonable price?

Thank you, Husna

Hi,

You can still upgrade using the in-place update method and you will get an activated Windows 10 license. If you then want to do a fresh install you can do so, you just have to go through the in-place upgrade the first time.
The ability to do a clean install using a Windows 7 key has now gone, so there is an extra step required. I don't know what MS position is on this, but I suspect they want to still get machines on Windows 10 if they can so they are happy to leave it running in this way.

I did this a few weeks ago on an old Windows 7 machine. I do agree with you though about new hardware if the machine is old, and it may be a less messy route in the long run.

Andrew.

Hi
Windows 10 is unfortunately no longer free of charge when upgrading from Windows 7. The upgrade offer expired in January of this year I believe, so if you wish to use Windows 10 you will have to purchase a license from Microsoft or a participating retailer. Here is the link to the Microsoft store page for Windows 10:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/b/windows
You may also wish to consider purchasing a new computer with Windows 10 pre-installed. If your machine is significantly older, it may not run Windows 10 To the best of its ability, the Microsoft store page has information on recommended computers specifications. Take care.

It probably won't be completely painless if you attempt it yourself.
I'd suggest taking it to a local shop or using one of the people on this list who perform computer repairs / upgrades for blind people.
The upgrade its self is still actually free so anything you'd be paying would be covering the persons time.

Hi All,
My laptop runs Windows 7 and things are starting to happen that is leading me to believe it is time to switch to Windows 10.
Is this a simple upgrade process and does it involve handing over cash?
Thanks
Colin
